Where did I get my information for this daily devotional on God's characteristics and names? I wrote several studies called, Consider Jesus and A Common Sense Bible Study on Loving God, Others, and Self to teach at our church and in the community some years back; the Bible study, God Loves You and Me which is posted on BecauseofGod.com. All 3 studies are the foundation of this daily devotional. I have also written and taught various other studies on God's characteristics and names. I want to acknowledge authors I have read that have given me and many others insight into Who God is: A.W. Tozer, the author of The Knowledge of the Holy. Kay Arthur, the author of LORD I Want To Know You.

Day One: You Must Know the One true God

Background of Daniel the prophet, the man who wrote the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. Daniel was taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon when he was about 15 years old, with a number of other people. This was during the siege of Jerusalem in the year 605 BC. Daniel knew the One True God and served Him while he was in captivity from 605 BC until about 536 BC when he died. (This would place him under King Cyrus of the Medo-Persian Empire at the time of his death.) Daniel's godly influence changed kings and kingdoms, and God used Daniel to outline the future of our world's history for us. A few of the kings came to know the One True God through Daniel, and made him a "wise man" and / or a head ruler in their kingdoms - King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon being the main one. When Daniel was put into the Lion's den, he was in his eighties.

Day Eleven: The One True God is Righteous and Just

What does death mean Biblically? Death doesn't mean "extinction" as you might think, but more "a separation from". Remember, God created us eternal beings. Sleep is a term used for death, because death isn't an end. (Mark 5:39) The result of sin is death. (Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:56a) The punishment for sin is death. (Genesis 2:16-17; Romans 6:23) Sin caused a separation with God. (Isaiah 59:2) This separation from God is spiritual death. The separation in relationship with God was immediately evidenced by Adam's and Eve's hiding from Him in the garden. Death completely changed our eternal existence - instead of living with God eternally, we live separated from Him in eternal punishment. (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). The introduction of death into our world brought awful effects to our earthly bodies as we all know all too well. The outcome of this aging is physical death (separation from our physical body). As Christian we are obviously still in a process of aging/dying physically; but because of Jesus we are not spiritually dead anymore. Our eternal existence is in heaven with God. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17)
